Blocks of Cheese, Dr. Pimple Popper, and Numbing Out

Amid reports of more mass shootings, you might opt to numb out. I understand. Most of us use something in our lives to numb out when we don’t know how to handle or process our distress.

  • It might be eating, drinking, or smoking. (Like that deck of cards-sized "block" of sharp cheddar that I wanna cram down my maw.)

  • It might be biting your nails, picking your skin, or pulling your hair. (Or watching Dr. Pimple Popper!)

  • It might be bingeing Netflix, online shopping, and scrolling Instagram while the hours slip away. (Setting my 15 min/day timer on Instagram was a game-changer--I highly recommend it.)

None of these things are objectively good or bad.

  • All of them can be experienced in a way that enhances pleasure and enjoyment.

  • And all of them can be used in a way that is about numbing instead of experiencing, about escaping instead of being present.

If it feels urgent, if it feels compulsive, if you’re trying to get away from yourself--it’s numbing.

If you're using a substance or activity to get away from your life, there’s nothing wrong with you. It’s normal and common. But just because numbing is normal in our society doesn’t mean it has to be that way.

And it doesn’t mean there aren’t costs.

  • To your body, to your mind, to your soul.

  • To your hopes, dreams, and aspirations.

  • To your relationship with the world and with yourself.

The good news is it’s actually easier to change these habits than you think (she said like any good yeasayer would).

I know, I know...you’ve tried before, . But you were trying the wrong tools. Heck, you probably weren’t trying tools at all. You were trying to white-knuckle it with discipline, then eventually giving up and drowning your shame.

That sh*t doesn’t work. Obvs.

Here’s what does:

  1. Learning how to create a science-backed approach to change the habit over time.

  2. Learning how to allow and process urges so that it feels easy not to act on them.

That’s it.

It’s not much, yet IT'S ALSO EVERYTHING. (<--- not hyperbole)

This is what I help people like you do, .

So if you know you numb out and you haven’t been able to change it, just know that a small investment of time, effort and money will create a return you can’t even imagine right now. Here's what one client had to say:

Working with Meghan helped me at a time when I was overwhelmed…She helped me get to the root of what was important, while reminding me that carving out time for myself makes everything seem possible.

Y.G., 44

Because how can you put a price on the ability to be present in the only life you’ll ever have?
