TSL #017: Hobbies? Who Has Time For Those?

Read time: 1 minute 35 seconds

Hey you! What do you for fun these days?

Is this a hard question to answer? Do you struggle to recall the last time you even had a hobby?

As a coach, one of my favorite parts of working with clients is helping them reclaim their hobbies (see example in the image below). 🥳

When we bring meaning to our leisure time, like we do through hobbies, we enjoy a range of benefits…from boosting our mental wellbeing to strengthening our sense of self, autonomy, and connection.✨

Whether it's painting, playing a musical instrument, gardening, cooking, or something else, hobbies provide an outlet for your self-expression, while also helping you to relax and unwind from the stressors of daily life.

Sounds great, right? Well, here are three steps to reclaim anew your hobbies…even if you don't know what they are.

WHAT TO DO

  1. (Re)Discover your interests: Create a short list of three to five activities (feel free to include ones you've never tried before). You might even play with Venn diagrams of your interests to explore their intersections. If you're stumped, then consider looking at the patterns of your daily life: "Where do you spend most of your time and energy?"

  2. Be expectation-free: Reconnecting with your favorite pastimes requires you to be patient with yourself and to allow yourself room to evolve.

  3. Give yourself permission to take breaks: Becoming frustrated with re-engaging in a former hobby or learning something new is all part of the process. Remember to run your own race.
