TSL #013: Get Out Of Your Own Way
Read time: 1 minute 50 seconds
Feel like your thoughts and beliefs are holding you back from reaching your goals?
Struggle with self-doubt or a negative inner dialogue?
Want to respond to life's challenges more powerfully?
Let's talk Saboteurs. Part of a “new-ish” field called Positive Intelligence (with a book by the same name), your Saboteurs are the internal voices that cause you to get in your own way.
Here's how Saboteurs may show up in your life…
The Judge: This voice constantly criticizes and evaluates everything you do, creating feelings of self-doubt and anxiety. (BTW: We all have this Saboteur.)
The Controller: This Saboteur tries to control everything around you, including your own thoughts and feelings, leading to feelings of stress and overwhelm.
The Avoider: This voice encourages you to avoid uncomfortable situations or emotions, leading to missed opportunities and stagnation.
The Victim: This Saboteur blames others or external circumstances for your problems, leading to feelings of powerlessness and resentment.
The Hyper-Achiever: This voice pushes you to constantly achieve more and be perfect, leading to burnout and feelings of inadequacy.
The Hyper-Rational: This Saboteur overanalyzes everything and can lead to indecision and difficulty making choices.
The Pleaser: This voice focuses on pleasing others at the expense of your own needs and desires, leading to feelings of resentment and exhaustion.
The Restless: This Saboteur makes it difficult to focus and stay present, leading to distraction and lack of productivity.
The Stickler: This voice fixates on rules and perfection, leading to inflexibility and frustration.
WHAT TO DO
When you attempt to undo your overloading and under-living, a key step is being able to recognize and overcome your Saboteurs. While there are multiple ways to do this that I teach you inside Radical Sabbatical, the first step is awareness.
To get a better understanding of your Saboteurs, take this free assessment. It'll take ~5 minutes and you'll walk away with a better understanding of how you get in your own way.
By becoming aware of these internal voices and responding in targeted ways, you can cultivate self-compassion and more helpful thinking to fuel your fulfillment.
