That Time I Left the 2018 Snowmaggedon for Cabo and Everything was Magical

We're having an impossibly beautiful snowpocalypse here in Minnesota. "Impossibly" because I can't get out my back door to take a proper picture of the soft, gleaming blanket of fresh powder. But, trust me, I've got Norman Rockwell-type beauty outside my window.

Which, ironically, has me thinking about my upcoming spring break to Cabo.

Which has me thinking about last year's spring break trip...also to Cabo.

I'm not usually one to visit the same destination year after year (except for San Sebastián...I would happily visit(live?) there every year). But I'm headed back to Cabo this March because I like a good deal (shout out to the new Solaz resort) with great friends...and I got 'em both.

But let me tell you about last year's trip to illustrate the power of what I've come to call: "Spread the Joy."

This is a story best told in bullet points because there's just too much joy:

  • Feeling ho-hum about a mid-April trip to Mexico, but end up leaving the day after a 18-inch snowfall

  • Flight delayed a few hours and arrive at airport abuzz with the longest. lines. ever. of crabby people who'd been stuck in MSP an extra two days due to weather

  • Check-in agent informs us we can't make our connecting flight in Chicago and (since there are no other options that day) must return the next day for a flight

  • [PANIC AND INNER DIALOGUE]: "I will NOT, under any circumstances, return home today. Do you know what it took to get here? Nope. I will take 5 flights today if necessary."

  • [CALM, UNDERSTANDING, AND KIND REAL LIFE DIALOGUE]: "Oh no. I feared this might be the case. I bet it's nuts here today for you. Our friend is meeting us in Cabo but, without me, she won't be able to check into our resort. Is there any other workaround solution?"

  • Agent scurries behind the Wizard of Oz door to talk with her boss and returns bewildered, "You two are so lucky. We normally NEVER do this for weather-related flight delays but my boss approved me to re-route you on a Delta flight, but you'll have to check in at their front desk."

  • Smiling at our good fortune we start shuffling over to Delta, where a magical Delta fairy appears out of nowhere to intercept us and scan our passes on the go to avoid the check-in line. She then directs us to the secret skyway check-in to avoid long security lines and improve our chances of making our new flight.

  • Make flight to Phoenix, where we leisurely dine while soaking in our luck

  • Hear "Last call" over the intercom and realize we miscalculated our free time and run to the gate. We arrive out of breath but full of hope and good vibes from our day's kismet.

  • "You're so lucky. You JUST made it. We normally never let people board this late but go ahead. And enjoy your trip!" said the gate agent, with a smile.

  • Land at the Cabo airport, fully of good cheer and laughter. Notice a woman wearing a stunning beaded necklace and compliment her on it. She responds by gifting me a beaded ring, telling me it brings good blessings.

  • Arrive at resort and, during evening resort happy hour, am the first person who's name is called to win a prize

  • A week of funzies in Cabo, including a super-sweet deal to stay at Solaz, the hot, new resort

  • On return flight, offer to volunteer for San Diego layover; get bumped up to first class instead to enjoy champagne dreams as the perfect ending to a magical trip

Now, I share this all not to brag, but to show you what's possible when you Spread the Joy

Kidding! That's what everyone who's even remotely metaphysical says. I say it totally to brag.

AND to show you what's possible. ;)

If you want to experience joy, you have to Spread the Joy here and there.

You don't have to make it an over-the-top, glittery joy. Just a genuine "see the good in this laughable situation" will do.

So those are your takeaways for today:

  1. Sometimes you have to Spread the Joy, baby.

  2. My Cabo trip was effin' fantastic.

Those of us in the first-class Spread the Joy cabin are already saying, "Champagne? Yes, I'd love some."

We know we're headed somewhere exciting. Where will we go? I don't know. But our journey will be one helluva trip.

See you on board.
